About the Author

Born in Bursa in 1970, Aslı Biçen graduated from Department of English Language and Literature of Boğaziçi University. She translated many books into Turkish, from authors like Dickens, Faulkner, Cortazar, Fuentes, Rushdie, Djuna Barnes, Durrell, Arthur Phillips, Wallace Stevens, Ariel Dorfman and Elif Şafak. Her first narrative Elime Tutun/Hold My Hand was published in 2005 and her novel İnceldiği Yerden/Let It Break in 2008. She lives in Istanbul and works as a freelance translator.

Aslı Biçen tells us a semi-fantastic story that takes place in an imaginary town, "almost an island but for the very thin connection to the mainland". The main characters are Grocer Cemal, who has been searching for his lost father all over Turkey for years and high school student Jülide, who lives with her grandmother having lost her parents in an accident. Though Jülide has a secret power that allows her to "command things" from time to time and Cemal has extraordinary sensibilities, the two have a trait in common: Their powerlessness in the face of oppression. But as the atmosphere of oppression and lack of freedom gets worse and worse in their town, both have to fight back almost in spite of themselves. This novel, starting like a small town story and moving on as a fantastic political narration, has won critical acclaim both for its successful plot and for its language of rare subtlety.
